Mariachi plaza fun zone

natural tendencies

Course: Arch 183 | Instructor: teddy slowik | spring 2018 | WSOA

The intention of this course is to develop within its students an appreciation for architecture as a medium capable of engaging and responding to multiple scales of in-habitation. The fragment and the whole are to be understood as equal parts in the architectural proposal and that opportunities for design lie within the coordination of systems that tether together scales

of occupation. Through the design and editing of their tectonic systems, students will be prompted to make decisions regarding the qualitative nature of their inhabitable spaces: above vs. below, perimeter vs. interior, solid vs. void, poche vs. non-poche, etc.

Plan Drawing

The Mariachi Plaza main site was a studio group project. The whole site, with the models, and the drawings were created by the whole studio as a group. This site, in the Mariachi plaza, was designated for adults as well as kids. The fun zone in the program was created for kids who had their parents either work in the market place or the hospital near by. The structure of the model easily helped creating that fun zone area. The tubes are available for people to walk through them and the top ones bring sunlight through the market.

Study Models

This project started with creating abstract models using modules built with basswood.

After creating the modules, digital fabrication was used to construct the model. The processes that were mainly used were 3D printing and Laser Cutting.

For the final model 3D printing was used. For this model, there are three modules that are presented using curved tubes, flat surfaces and straight tubes as well. From this model, these drawings were created. As from these drawings, my site was created.
