The course began with the analysis of a centrally planned precedent. While students were asked to analyze the whole, the focus of the phase was the part. Students began with the analysis of the plan and identify the part that generates the whole. Partially Similar
investigates symmetry in architecture through a study of the part to whole relationships present in centrally planned architecture. Students began with the study of precedents developing and expanding their understanding of symmetry and polygonal geometry.

The Project started with a case study on St Giacomo Cathedral. Using the existing plan, a rough polygon drawing was drawn to explain how the plan was constructed using only circles and lines. Using the existing plan and section, polygons were drawn in detail only using circles and lines. Using only the polygons from the cathedral, changes were made, to fit the program and then the aquarium was designed
